Types of Acne Scars

Acne is a scourge that affects people of all ages, regardless of skin type, irrespective of personal hygiene. It is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition that occurs when follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells which result in whiteheads, blackheads and pimples on the face, shoulders, back, chest, and upper arms.

Unfortunately for many people, acne can result in visible scarring that usually has a negative affect on personal appearance and self-esteem. Acne scars can be professionally treated to improve your complexion and skin quality, however there are several types of acne scars, and knowing which type you have will determine the best way to treat them with one or a combination of the following Este acne treatments: Chemical Peels, Microneedling, HydraFacial, Skin Tightening, and/or Dermal Fillers.

Ice Pick Scars

Ice pick acne scars are characteristically deep but with small pits, and they can reach past the top level of the skin’s surface. This is one of the most common types along with Boxed scars.

Rolling Scars

These types of scars can cause the skin’s surface to have a wavy look due to damage under the epidermis. Rolling scars are usually wide and shallow.

Boxed Scars

These scars are wide with defined edges and sharp angles. They appear oval in shape and can be shallow or deep.

Hypertrophic/Keloid Scars

Hypertrophic scars are typically raised and are firm to the touch; most commonly found on the back and chest but can also be on the face and neck. Keloid scars are thick and also raised in appearance, they can be larger than Hypertrophic scars.

What type of scarring you have will determine if fillers, skin resurfacing or skin tightening is the best option for you. A combination of our Long Island acne treatments may be required to attain a smoother, more even skin tone and texture. For the best long-term acne scar treatment results, it is recommended an Este New York skin assessment is conducted to determine the type of scarring you have.

What technology does Este Medical Group use?

Este clinics worldwide use Visia Digital Skin Analysis to evaluate the true condition of your skin. The information a Visia digital imaging scan provides will reveal skin issues on and below the surface. It is an effective method to assess acne scar types and the extent of acne scar damage.

Here’s some common skincare issues a Visia Digital Skin Analysis assessment will screen for:

  • Acne scarring
  • Wrinkles
  • Texture
  • Pores
  • UV spots
  • Brown spots
  • Red areas
  • Porphyrins

A Visia skin analysis provides a scientific, multi-dimensional portrait of your skin which an Este skincare expert can then use to make recommendations. The data gathered during a skin assessment will allow you to make smart choices about available acne treatments and acne scar laser treatments in Long Island, New York.
