Hair Loss for Men

Male hair loss: What you need to know

Hair loss can happen anywhere on the body, however it commonly occurs on the scalp. Male hair loss can start in your teens, and progress into your early 20s and 30s. Up to 50% of men will experience a degree of hair loss by the time they reach their 50s. Disappearing scalp hair takes a few different forms, such as shedding, thinning, and bald patches. This steady decline in hair volume will vary from person to person; here are some factors that can influence hair loss.

  • Genes: studies indicate genetics account for about 80% of male pattern baldness
  • Hormonal imbalance: high levels of the DHT hormone can lead to hair loss
  • Stress: significant physical/emotional stress has been linked to hair loss
  • Diet: deficiencies in nutrients can affect hair health
  • Vitamin deficiency: low levels of certain vitamins can affect hair loss
  • Medications: hair loss can be a rare medication side effect, however a variety of drugs may contribute

The number one cause of hair loss is male pattern baldness. Also known as androgenetic alopecia, male pattern baldness is a hereditary condition. Other types of hair loss include: general hair thinning, receding hairline, thinning hair crown, alopecia areata, and trauma (telogen effluvium).

The sooner you address your hair loss, the more likely you are to prevent further damage. If you have questions about hair loss solutions we invite you to arrange a consultation with one of our experienced Long Island clinic hair loss doctors. What is male pattern baldness?

Although there are many types of hair loss for men, the most common is male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia). According to the American Hair Loss Association, 95% of male hair loss is from androgenetic alopecia; a hereditary condition that can also be influenced by hormone levels and aging. People with male pattern baldness often have close relatives with the same type of hair loss.

Male pattern baldness starts around the temples and continues around the perimeter and the crown of the head, it often looks like a ring of hair around the bottom of the scalp. Most men experiencing male pattern hair loss will eventually become bald.

Here’s how hormone levels play a role; dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a derivative of testosterone, in an excessive amount can cause hair loss. DHT affects hair follicles by shrinking and shortening the hair, which makes it easier to fall out as well as hard to regrow.

What types of hair loss can men experience?

Hair loss affects everyone in different ways, ranging from mild to extreme cases, with a variety of different causes. Besides male pattern baldness, here are the most prevalent types of hair loss for males.

Receding hairline

One of the most pervasive patterns of hair loss is a receding hairline. Unfortunately it is one of the first signs of male pattern baldness. A receding pattern of hair loss usually starts at either side of the forehead, creating a distinct M-shape in the hairline. As this pattern progresses, hair on the top or back of the head usually begins to fall out.

General thinning

Hair thinning is hair loss spread evenly over the top of your scalp. Common with aging, the thinning often begins at the hairline along the forehead.

Thinning crown

The crown is the highest point on your scalp, toward the back of your head; another place where males will experience hair thinning. When hair thins over the crown, the scalp becomes visible, and eventually a bald patch may appear. Crown thinning may happen in conjunction with a receding hairline, but most males will experience one or the other.

Alopecia

Alopecia areata is immune system related and causes patchy hair loss. This condition causes cells in your immune system to surround and attack your hair follicles. It is not considered a serious medical condition, but it most likely will result in anxiety and sadness. Hair growth treatments are available to help with this type of hair loss.

Severe stress (telogen effluvium)

Hair loss can result from extreme stress and shock, this is known as telogen effluvium. Stress-related hair loss usually starts about three months after a traumatic experience. Signs to look for include: increased hair shedding, thinning hair, and patches of missing hair.

If you are unsure what type of hair loss you are experiencing, our New York hair loss specialist team can help you with a diagnosis. Book an Este Medical Group hair loss Long Island consultation to determine the most appropriate hair loss treatment for you.

How do I know if I'm losing my hair?

Not sure if you have male pattern baldness? We recommend contacting Este’s hair loss clinic in Long Island, as leaving it untreated may result in further hair loss. Signs to look for include:

  • Receding hairline on forehead
  • Thinning hair on top your head
  • Excessive hair loss
  • Scalp becoming more visible
  • Widening of your hairline
  • Patches of hair missing

Suggestion: One thing you can do at home is compare a photo of yourself from last year (e.g., find a good close-up of your head) to how you look now. Do you notice a difference in your hairline?

Some hair loss is normal, but if you are concerned, or actually experiencing changes that match with one of the types of hair loss mentioned above, then we advise you to book a hair loss consultation at Our Este Medical Long Island, New York hair loss clinic.

Can a hair loss treatment help me?

Advances in hair loss therapy, technology and surgery (i.e., hair transplant) means retaining the hair you have, regrowing it, and/or replacing hair is absolutely possible.

Este Medical Group has several successful New York hair loss treatments available.

Hair Transplant for Men

The Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) hair transplant is Este Medical Group’s most popular hair loss treatment with men. In just five months clients experience visible hair growth (i.e., on average 50% hair growth). And within a year most transplant recipients will experience up to 100% hair growth. A FUE hair loss treatment restores hair by replacing old follicles with new follicles that are still able to grow hair. It’s a very successful treatment for extreme hair loss.

Laser Hair Growth

This regrowth treatment is best for treating a receding hairline, general thinning, and male pattern baldness. Laser therapy stimulates hair follicles and their natural growth cycle. This treatment has a 95% success rate, and you can see results in about four months. This is an excellent treatment to replenish the scalp with new hair growth.

Mesotherapy for Hair Loss

This microinjection treatment targets the mesoderm (below the scalp's surface) to halt hair loss and stimulate hair regrowth. Mesotherapy is a very efficient technique for slowing hair loss and treating alopecia.

Beard Transplant

If your facial hair growth is patchy and sparse then a Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) hair transplant can help you with a beard, goatee, mustache, and sideburns.

For the most successful results we recommend you have a New York hair loss specialist consultation. Contact our Este Long Island hair loss treatment team for a consultation today!
